NEC Merit Scholarship 2020-21 for North East Students



The Secretary, North Eastern Council (NEC) has published the notification for grant of NEC Merit Scholarship 2020-21 for the students of the North Eastern Region for studies in India only for Higher Professional Courses. The scholarship shall be awarded by the North Eastern Council, Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region, Government of India, Shillong. Interested students may read the following conditions carefully and make sure to be fully eligible before applying.


Name of the Scholarship: NEC Merit Scholarship 

Session: 2020-21

Total No. of Scholarship: 

  • 1600 nos. (Whole Northeast)
  • 320 nos. (Assam)
Course wise scholarship for Assam:

  • Diploma - 30 nos.
  • Degree - 200 nos.
  • PG Degree - 80 nos.
  • M.Phil/ Ph.D. - 10 nos.
Scholarship amount:
  • Diploma- Rs. 20,000/-p.a. 
  • Degree- Rs. 22,000/- p.a. 
  • Post graduate- Rs. 25,000/- p.a. 
  • M. Phil./Ph D- Rs. 30,000/- p.a
Eligibility conditions:

  • Resident of: Permanent resident of NE Region
  • Academic year: 2020-21 and onwards
  • Currently in receipt of other scholarship: Not eligible
  • Annual income of parents: Not more than Rs. 8 Lakhs
Qualifying examination & marks:
  • For Diploma: HSLC/HSSLC/Secondary School Leaving /Senior Secondary Leaving certificate examination from a recognised State/Central board with minimum 60% marks in aggregate.
  • For Degree: HSSLC/Senior Secondary Leaving Certificate examination from a recognized State/Central Board with minimum 60% marks in aggregate. 
  • For Post Graduate: Degree level examination in any discipline (BA/BSc/BE/B Tech/MBBS/LLB/BCA/BBA etc. of any recognized Institute/ University with minimum 60% marks in aggregate. 
  • For M.Phil./Ph.D.: PG degree from any recognized University with minimum 60% marks in aggregate.
How to apply: The applicants are required to fill up the application form on National Scholarship Portal (NSP) (www.scholarships.in). They may also fill up the application form using NSP Mobile app or UMANG Mobile App. 

Documents required:
  • Permanent Residential Certificate (PRC)
  • Income Certificate issued by the Competent Authority
  • Bank Account Pass Book
  • Details of qualifying examination
  • Synopsis signed by the project guide/ Director (Research) or any official authorized by the Institute/University in the case of M.Phil/Ph.D. candidates
  • Any other document as may be required under NSP guidelines
